Best Story

A colleague had sent me a proposal request for an IT consulting contract with a top Fortune 500 company. Intrigued, I submitted my outline and was asked to present it to the executive team.

When the day came, I arrived early to check the tech compatibility and set up my presentation. When I was done, I sat down to review my notes which happened to be close to the beverage table. Shortly after, the executives entered the conference room. Smiling at me as they walked in, the VP first checked with his colleagues to see if they wanted any coffee. As he walks over to me, he hands me his credit card; he asked me if I could go downstairs to Starbucks to grab coffee for everyone? Being a team player, I said, "Sure, do you mind if I grab a coffee for myself as well?" I could see a look of shock as he said, "Yeah, sure, grab yourself something."

15 minutes later, I set the 10 coffees in 3 trays and 2 pastries on the conference table. As I started distributing them, the VP steps out to ask the admin, "Where's Chris from PICF, Inc.? I thought they were presenting this morning." When he comes back in, I'm standing at the front of the room next to his seat. As he approaches me, I hand him his credit card, and I thanked him for the coffee and asked if he was ok with us starting.

At this point, everyone in the room had a slight grin with a precarious look. Not missing a beat, I began the presentation and, in the end, asked for questions and thanked them all for their time. As I was saying bye, I shook the VP's hand and said, next time, you've gotta get the coffee."

I secured the contract because I was the best candidate based on my years of experience and the innovative directional focus for this particular project. I had 5 great years working for this company, but this situation had always stuck with me because it's one of the first times when I was finally at the big boy's table, and I was seen as help before I was seen for what could bring to the table in a workplace setting.
