I get this question a lot, especially because I am a burnout expert. People just assume that I’ve got a personal burnout story. In fact, I’m the ONLY burnout coach I know who doesn’t. But this isn’t by accident.
When I was in graduate school for psychology, I attended a professional conference. One of the speakers shared about how burnout is common amongst psychologists in private practice. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that talk left a mark on me.
When it was time for me to start a private practice, I decided to do it with intention.
I found office space near my gym.
I scheduled my patients from 9–5, avoiding nights and weekends.
I would go work out during the middle of the day.
I’d schedule breaks throughout my day to complete all my patient notes.
As I started doing research for my book, The Solution to Burnout, I realized that having that awareness ahead of time and creating a strategic approach to work is one way to prevent burnout.
I started out as a psychologist and over the years I found coaching to be a promising direction as the clients I worked with were higher functioning and motivated to climb to greater heights in their careers and personal lives.
