Biography

Named one of New England’s Top 40 Influencers in Content and Digital Marketing, I fully understand the power of online engagement. I implement marketing strategies that result in quick growth, rapid revenue, and happy customers. Having worked in the tech world for nearly 20 years, I also have a passion for making the business landscape as accessible for women as it is for men. I have also published a book on the subject: AMPLIFY: How To Grow Your Reputation And The Kickass Career You Love. I run my own marketing firm (Holly Chessman Marketing) as well as write columns on marketing strategy, social media, and content marketing for a number of publications (e.g., Forbes, Maximize Social Business, Social Media Examiner). I have worked for a variety of high tech companies as well as consulting firms. I'm not afraid to embrace my nerdy side (as evidenced by my love of Doctor Who and my “talking” TARDIS) and I have a lifelong love of chocolate.

Passion

Passions: equal rights for women in the workplace, helping to integrate women who have left work for family reasons back into the workplace, writing, marketing strategy, turning the social media monologue into a dialogue, spending quality time with my family (husband, 4 kids, 1 dog), chocolate, and science fiction (Doctor Who in particular though you'll often find my nose in a book).

Best Story

My favorite moments are when people come to me weeks or even months after they have heard me speak, letting me know how my advice affected their lives. One woman sent me a note about a week after she heard me talk, letting me know that she took my words about speaking up to heart. She let her manager know that she wanted a new title, in a new area of the company, with a higher salary. She said she was terrified! But guess what - she presented a strong case backed with facts, just as I had advised, and she got the job! Another woman wrote to me a few months after she heard me talk. She told me how she had been telling herself that she wasn't sure she was good enough to do well in a programming course. She had been avoiding even signing up because she was afraid she would fail. After she heard me speak, she put into practice to my words about being your own best friend and becoming your personal cheering squad. She cheered herself on, started practicing supportive self-talk, and rocked the course! It makes me so happy to hear about women succeeding, and even happier to know that my words can really make a difference in someone's life.

Origin Story

I began my career in technical writing, switched to marketing writing, and then expanded into all aspects of marketing strategy and program delivery. The thing I love best about marketing is that it is such a fast-paced, always changing area of engagement. You can only succeed if you are always learning. And marketing has grown over the years to encompass areas of customer service, sales, product management and more, so you always need to be thinking "big picture" in whatever you do.

As my career has grown, I have gone from being a follower to assessing the workplace around me to developing a leadership mindset. Along with seeing the bigger picture of marketing within companies, I also find myself constantly examining the internal workings of the companies themselves. It is with that in mind that I have found myself inspired to encourage the growth of women within companies - in order to benefit both women as a whole and the business world itself. I find myself increasingly moved to speak up and encourage women to understand that if they want to be a strong presence in the workforce, they are not only doing a good thing for themselves, but they are also becoming role models for the next generation. I make it my active choice to work in an environment that puts women on equal footing as men. I'd like to see that propagated across more companies in the Boston area and the nation.
