Kari Knutson is a professional speaker, school counselor, storyteller, mother, closet rap artist, itchy foot traveler and chronic extrovert. She is an expert in the field of Emotional Intelligence (also known as EQ) and Human Development. Her company, Knutson Speaks takes psychology ‘off the couch’ and brings it to the people. She does this through presentations where she demystifies concepts in psychology and turns them into clear, tangible, and relevant takeaways that people can use to help transform their personal and professional lives.
She wrote, directed, and stars in a one-woman storytelling show all about our human connection called, “Ain’t Never Met a Stranger: Stories from the Passenger Seat.” She also has a monthly podcast called 'Get Big Out Loud' where she talks about the complexity of the human experience and how to use applied psychology to improve different aspects of people's lives.
She lives in Denver with her husband, two children, two cats, and five very emotionally intelligent guinea pigs.
Anything to do with human development, especially Emotional Intelligence! While many people have heard the term Emotional Intelligence, it is hard for them to define what it means, let alone apply it to their lives. My approach of taking psychology "off the couch" and bringing it to people is all about making complex ideas in psychology not only relevant but also easily accessible with practical applications for everyday life.
The first time I called myself a professional speaker was huge! I used to introduce myself as a therapist and then said, "and I speak about issues in psychology". I intentionally decided that if I was going to run my business by being a professional speaker on issues related to psychology that I better start telling people...especially myself that I am a speaker. Saying I am a therapist was in my comfort zone, saying I was a professional speaker sent me into a new level of thinking and acting. I've never looked back!
My love of education, psychology, theater, acting, performing, teaching, curriculum development, and being incredibly social have all lead me to becoming a professional speaker. All of my prior work experience, travel, and education gave me the exact experiences I needed to be able to create topics of interest to audiences and the confidence to stand up in front of a crowd. I think of what I do more as teaching and connecting not only presenting.
