How many of you can say you are enjoying the career you dreamed of as a child? I was born three things...a sailor, a writer, and a teacher. On September 4th, 1974, at the age of 19, I joined the United States Navy. I retired on October 31st, 1996 with 22 years of honorable service. While in the Navy I had many opportunities to be a subject trainer/instructor. In 1995 I received my Master's Degree in Counseling. I retired from the Navy in 1995. As a civilian, I continued as an instructor for the Navy. In 2004 I was offered a position as an adjunct professor of psychology at Hampton University. In 2012 I published my first non-fiction book. On January 20th, 2017 I published my first fiction novel. To date, I am a retired sailor, retired professor, Christian Life Coach, active instructor, workshop facilitator, and author. Although my life was very traumatic, God blessed, and is still blessing, me to realize the careers I dreamed of as a child. I used the good and not-so-good events in my life to help me prepare myself both mentally and educationally. I tell my students and clients, "If I can do it...anyone can do it...that includes you."
While in the navy I learned there was a number 4 to the things I will do as an adult. I began to recognize that people trusted me with their problems and their secrets. Halfway through my Naval career I transitioned from Personnel to Navy Counselor. In this capacity I was responsible for the career, training, and life skill choices for my sailors. I enjoyed helping people find the tools needed to move toward the goals they set for themselves. Because of these experiences, I choose to complete my master's degree in Guidance and Urban Counseling and my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. In 2004 I started my own business. I entitled it 'NeverSayCain't" because most of my clients felt they could not (cain't) reach their goals until I introduced them to the tools they needed to adapt to so they could achieve their goals. I am proud of my students who have completed their PhDs in subjects pertaining to psychology and my clients that have gone on to live very productive lives.
