Passion

I have a passion for raising awareness about the role of copyright law in our daily lives. We are all Consumers and Creators of copyrighted content--whether we realize it or not. I teach entrepreneurs and organizations how to use copyright law as a tool to achieve their goals--to create and protect their assets. I enjoy bringing some FUN to a serious and important topic.

Best Story

1. Workshop content was stolen by a participant because the workshop creator did not have simple measures in place to minimize the risk of theft.
2. A business owner wanted to use postcards in a marketing campaign. The cards included comic book super heroes. The printer refused to print them because of copyright and trademark infringement. The client was angry; the graphic artist said he had modified the characters, so "that was OK." (Not true.) The client wanted to sign a waiver to protect the printer. (Won't work) The client stomped out. How did the story end?

Origin Story

As an academic librarian, as print evolved to electronic, I began negotiating licenses, and that rolled into copyright compliance education. I served as the filter between faculty/students/staff/administration and university counsel. A few years later, I was laid off in a budget cut. I began offering copyright compliance education to groups. I was asked to develop a CEU course "Copyright Skills as Risk Management Tools" for the Medical Library Association and have offered webinars for the Training Magazine Network. Other workshops have focused on copyright skills for authors, speakers, small businesses. (August 2019 for Innovation Women at Staples Studio in Danvers, MA)
