Biography

Democratizing tech and tech education for all people regardless of race, ability, socioeconomic status, gender or preference.

Passion

I get excited when I can be the living proof that a black girl from a low-income household, who wasn't encouraged in math or science can do well in the tech world. I want young (or older) women, minorities, people in the esl community, people in rural communities or anyone who was told "no you can't" to know that they can.

Best Story

As an art major in undergrad I had a lot of friends who were in the schools of engineering, mathematics and other "hard" sciences. They are always amazed that I "made it" into my current career without a traditional math and/or science education. As if the tech world is this club where you need a specific set of credentials, recommendation letters, a secret handshake and personality profile to get in. I got into the tech world with a bit of luck, a genuine interest in the work and the willingness to learn something new. I know that others can do the same while bringing a new perspective and identity to the field. Diversity breeds creativity and innovation!

Example Talks

First Impressions: Dynamic Customer Segmentation Using AI

I spoke at Digital Summit DC to a crowd of about 300 marketing professionals about how to implement AI into their customer segmentation for better, faster and more actionable results. AI is not just for the computer science nerds (though I am proud to be among this group). It can be incorporated easily into marketing initiatives and used to not only increase engagement with potential customers but to understand those customer more quickly so that you can talk to them on their level. Personalization via AI is not just for the huge corporations like Netflix and Google, its for everybody!

Gender Bias in AI: From Conflict to Compromise

How can we ensure that the AI applications of today don't exacerbate the biases and inequities of yesterday? Since machine intelligence learns primarily from observing data that it is presented with, it is important that gender balance in machine learning is crucial to prevent algorithms from perpetuating gender ideologies that disadvantage women and other genders. I speak on a panel with two other data scientists on how to solve this issue.

A Seat at the Table: A Conversation About Diversity in the Workplace

For International Women's Day I spoke on inclusion in the tech space for women and people of color. I sit on a panel with 4 accomplished women including Bobbie Carlton as the moderator to talk on how to deal with uncomfortable work situations, how to be taken seriously in male dominated industries and why it is important to have women and men involved in the conversation of women in the workplace.
