My passion is when companies take risks, developing and seeing talent thrive, finding purpose at work, being authentic and driving positive change.
My 15-year career in the e-commerce space is far away from a childhood in the tobacco fields of North Carolina.
I grew up in the small town - only 400 hundred people as of 2018 - of Salemburg, North Carolina where I worked on the family tobacco farm. In the hot summer months, I was consistently stuck with the hardest job on the farm. The intensive manual labor everyone else avoided, I was volunteered for, like following the tobacco harvester to pick up scraps that were left behind. So at a very young age, I appreciated the value of hard work.
When I wasn’t spending summers in the field, I would join my grandfather at the Five and Dime store or my Aunt’s clothing boutique in Wilmington, NC another place where I became exposed to the world of retail. And I was hooked.
After graduating college, my first foray into the world of e-commerce came when I joined ChannelAdvisor and became immersed in the world of online retail and marketplaces, learning valuable lessons in operational scaling and the highs and lows of a start up environment. After 6 years at ChannelAdvisor, I was tapped to lead new revenue initiatives at Barnes & Noble under former President, John Foley (now CEO of Peloton). John taught me the importance of having a soul and a purpose when leading and how staying true to that mission, while not always easy enables you to find genuine fulfillment professionally and personally.
I've been searching for that fulfillment in a variety of ways taking roles at established companies like eBay and startups like Anatwine (acquired by Zalando) and it wasn't until joining Spoonflower that I truly experienced what John had shared with me many years ago. You have to really believe in what you're doing or it will not matter.
