Biography

Dr. Michelle Caryn Paul is an industrial-organizational psychologist and transformation leader who has spent more than 25 years helping organizations engineer human performance such that individuals experience fulfilling work and organizations optimize outcomes. She launched her consulting career in late-1990s Silicon Valley, guiding high-growth companies such as Adobe, Cisco, and Electronic Arts to strengthen human capital metrics and organizational health. As President of Equifinality Solutions, Dr. Paul now helps her clients maximize performance with a focus on adopting AI responsibly and ethically. Her advisory services include developing AI strategy and governance, upskilling employees, redesigning job roles and teams, and reinventing business processes with AI.
An engaging speaker known for translating behavioral science into practical action, Dr. Paul has led workshops and delivered keynote addresses for a variety of Society for Human Resources Management local chapters, a variety of DisruptHR local chapters, the Society for Consulting Psychology, the Inclusion Allies Coalition, and several trade and professional membership associations. She earned a BA in Psychology and Sociology (summa cum laude) from Emory University and an MA and PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Passion

Helping leaders and teams be proactive and adopt AI responsibly and ethically such that people are able to do more of what is meaningful to them personally and to their organization

Best Story

If we are proactive and advocate for responsible AI adoption, we can help companies adopt generative AI in a way that advances the company's goals and the workforce simultaneously. Here's an example from an organization that did just this. IKEA used a generative AI to automate basic customer service interactions and found it no longer needed junior customer service personnel. They also found they could move their entire interior design service online and offered to upskill their customer service staff, helping them become online interior designers. A lot of people liked to take this offer because it allowed them to do something new and interesting that leveraged their service skills. The ones who didn't want to go in that direction could continue in customer service roles but address more complex customer needs, which was the type of work they wanted to do anyway. So this was a win win! The organization developed an entirely new revenue stream and the employees enjoyed skill development and career expansion. This is the kind of AI adoption I help organizations pursue.

Origin Story

I am a Washington DC native and a trained industrial/organizational psychologist. The origin of my career was frankly at my kitchen table growing up. My father was a labor attorney and represented unions like the AFL-CIO, Teamsters, Newspaper Guild, and others. During meals, we would always talk about people's problems at work. I remember being about 6 or 7 years old and thinking: "Gosh, people spend a lot of time at their jobs. How do we make sure they have good jobs, supportive work environments, jobs that utilize their talents, environments filled with fairness and equity instead of discrimination and trouble and stress for their families?" And so that's what really inspired me to become an industrial organizational psychologist. I started out in Silicon Valley helping high growth technology firms pay attention to the "people variables" as they tried to grow and build their organizations. I then came back to the East Coast and have been an external consultant for my whole career. One theme has been technology adoption, helping organizations harness the power of technology without losing the human in the center. And since 2022 I've been very much involved in helping organizations adopt AI.
