Biography

Nicolle Merrill makes AI approachable for anyone without a technical background. As founder and CEO of Boring AI, she has trained more than 30,000 professionals across 13 countries to use generative AI at work with confidence. Nicolle specializes in workforce strategy and upskilling for non-technical teams for AI.

Before founding Boring AI, she spent seven years designing human-centered AI on product teams. In 2019, she published the career book, Punch Doubt in the Face: How to Upskill, Change Careers, and Beat the Robots, to help people navigate a changing workplace.

Nicolle also teaches AI strategy and workforce transformation at Porto Business School. Her virtual keynotes cut through the AI hype to focus on the adaptability and change that people need now. She skips the predictions and fluff to deliver practical AI strategies that people can actually use.

Passion

Learning new languages, weird art collections, and hearing people's hot takes on AI in the workplace.

Origin Story

The first time I used ChatGPT I had two thoughts: 1. Oh wow, this is really cool. 2. Oh @#%&, this is going to take my job.

At the time, I was already working in AI, building chatbots. These were the dummer, less exciting bots that came before ChatGPT. I'm not a software engineer but I had worked my way into an AI job, using my background in language and research. Working in AI was my fourth career, and I had assumed I was safe from change. Yet there was ChatGPT, doing 70% of my job, and doing it better than I could.

I was wrecked. Even more awkward, I'd written a book on how to adapt to change in your career, and prepare for AI. I was an expert, and yet I was staring down the very thing I was warning others about.

I spent a few months in denial. Then I realized I had skills. Skills the robots still don't have. So I started asking all the curious questions about generative AI and experimenting with the tools. A few months later, I was on the top GenAI project in the company I worked for at the time, while starting my company, Boring AI, as a side hustle. And spoiler alert, things have worked out (so far). I'm on yet another new career path now, teaching thousands of people how to adapt when AI starts to wreck your career plan while helping companies reorient their workforce for AI.
