Biography

Lorena Martinez is a Mexican actor, comedian, storyteller, TEDx speaker, and creator redefining how adults experience creativity through play. She helps people reconnect to joy, courage, and their inner magic. Creator of PLAYDATE, a delightfully unconventional show where artists, dreamers, and troublemakers gather to craft, play, and tell the truth.

Passion

My passion is PLAY!
Not as entertainment. As a spiritual practice.

I believe we've spent far too long trapped in the relentless pursuit of self-improvement, productivity, and optimization. We've forgotten that play isn't a reward for finishing our work. It's the very thing that makes our best work possible.

Play reconnects us to our intuition. It unlocks our creative genius, builds courage, awakens curiosity, and brings us into what I call the Flow Zone: that magical state where ideas arrive, truth surfaces, and we become more fully ourselves.

I believe creativity is how we co-create with something larger than ourselves. It is one of the most profoundly human things we do. In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, our ability to imagine, to tell the truth, to make meaning from our lived experience, and to create something that has never existed before is becoming more valuable, not less.

Creative genius isn't a luxury. It's how we'll solve our biggest problems, build a more beautiful future, and remember who we are.

That's why I help people stop chasing a better version of themselves... and start playing their way back to the most authentic one.

Best Story

After graduating from grad school, I was told I had one year to become a "famous" actor in order to qualify for an extraordinary ability visa... or I would have to leave the United States.

As a recovering professional hustler, I did exactly what I thought success required. I networked relentlessly, trained constantly, chased every audition, every meeting, every opportunity. I was called back for Broadway shows, major television series, and incredible projects. Again and again it felt like, THIS is the one. And again and again, it ended in heartbreak.

As the months disappeared, so did my joy. My anxiety and depression reached levels I'd never experienced before. Then something unexpected happened. My inner child started asking me to paint.

It made absolutely no logical sense. Painting wasn't going to solve my immigration problem. But it was what I had loved most as a little girl. I spent hours painting, singing show tunes, and creating imaginary worlds. So, for the first time in years, I listened.

One afternoon, while I was painting, an idea landed: "An actress has one year to become famous or she'll be deported."

That single playful moment changed the trajectory of my life.

I began writing what would become my television series. I fell into stand-up comedy. I found extraordinary mentors, producers, and collaborators. Most importantly, I stopped trying to force my path and started creating one.

Ironically, the thing that looked the least productive became the thing that solved the problem. My creativity opened doors that hustle never could, eventually leading to the extraordinary ability visa that allowed me to stay in the United States. Today I'm finally a citizen!

That experience completely transformed my philosophy.

Today my work is built around one simple idea: what if the answer isn't more hustle?

What if it's more play?

Origin Story

I was born in Monterrey, Mexico and raised in a deeply conservative Catholic cult: Opus Dei.

Growing up, I learned that being a "good woman" meant being beautiful, obedient, self-sacrificing, and small. I was taught that pleasure was a sin, that sacrifice was what brought you closer to God, and that my own desires were far less important than what I was told God wanted for my life.

There was just one "problem". I've always been gloriously stubborn. And none of it ever sat well with me.

Then I found theater.

For the first time in my life, every cell in my body shouted YES! It wasn't practical. It wasn't expected. But it felt true. Theater became the first place where I learned to trust my own voice.

Around that same time, I stumbled across a quote in a bookstore that completely changed my life. It suggested that our deepest desires might not be temptations to resist, but clues placed within us by God. A compass. A North star.

I started to cry. What an incredible belief! So I chose it.

Against all odds, I convinced my parents to let me study theater at NYU. Through acting, storytelling, comedy, painting, and eventually creating my own work, I slowly replaced fear with curiosity and obligation with intuition.

Years later, while developing a story about witches, something clicked. The witch wasn't the villain I'd been taught to fear. She was the woman who trusted her own knowing.

That realization transformed my life.

Today my work is dedicated to helping people reconnect with their intuition, creativity, and joy. I believe play is a spiritual practice, creativity is how we co-create with the Divine, and our deepest desires aren't distractions from our purpose. They're often the map leading us toward it.
