After barely graduating high school, I headed to Orlando to work my way up at Disney World. (My original goal was to be Cinderella, but unfortunately, that was never offered) However, I was quickly promoted into leadership positions. Unfortunately, in the 90s, I had a lack of female mentors so many of my role models were classic "90s men." While my supervisors liked me, my co-workers thought I was a bit of a "Beotch". Eventually, I learned how to lead in a way that genuinely inspired my team to follow, and now I’m passionate about sharing actionable insights to help others achieve the same.
Leadership Lessons from Heroes and Villains: Building High-Functioning Teams
Every leader has the potential to inspire greatness or wreak havoc—just like the heroes and villains we love (or love to hate). The difference lies in the choices they make and the environments they create. High-functioning teams aren’t built by chance—they’re the result of intentional, thoughtful leadership.
The secret? Building an environment where team members feel safe, respected, and empowered to bring their best ideas forward. Leaders must also recognize that their own "superpowers" can sometimes have a dark side—what we might even call villainous traits if left unchecked. Research, including insights from Amy Edmondson, reveals that teams thrive when they feel safe to fail. This kind of trust fosters innovation, creativity, and collaboration, forming the cornerstone of success. And no, this can’t be built in an evil lair—it has to be rooted in a foundation of trust.
In this presentation, we’ll explore the core elements of impactful leadership: Effective Communication, Conflict Resolution, and Emotional Intelligence. Together, these skills can transform team dynamics and create a culture where people feel empowered to contribute their best. You’ll walk away with practical strategies to build trust, foster open dialogue, and create an environment where team members feel safe sharing their ideas.
We’ll also discuss what it means to be a truly “likable” leader. This isn’t about being overly friendly or charming; it’s about demonstrating genuine respect, staying authentic, and making people feel valued. Like the best heroes, great leaders lead with integrity, approachability, and a commitment to bringing out the best in others.
This session is packed with actionable tips for leaders at any level who want to build teams that not only perform well but thrive together. Whether you’re launching a new venture or leading an established team, you’ll leave with the tools and insights to create a culture where collaboration, innovation, and success become second nature.
Ready to be the hero your team needs? This presentation will help you take the first step.
