There’s a chapter in my life that’s raw, real, and deeply personal. I call it, “A Gun, Two Bullets, and Me.” At first glance, it sounds dramatic, maybe even dark. But it’s an inspiring reminder that life’s hardest moments can fuel our greatest transformations.
This story takes me back to a time when I felt lost and burdened, grappling with fears and questions about my life’s direction and my own worth. I was weighed down by society's expectations, personal doubts, and a sense of limitation, all telling me who I should be as I got older. But what society hadn’t prepared me for was how to face myself.
In a deeply vulnerable moment, I found myself staring at two bullets, and it was then that I realized something life-changing. Those two bullets weren’t symbols of fear or despair; they were symbols of my choice, my power. I could choose to give in to these doubts, or I could rise, finding strength in my imperfections, resilience in my wrinkles, and humor in all my quirks and challenges.
In that moment, I chose life, boldly and unapologetically. I realized I could shape my own story, finding laughter even in struggle. That’s the spirit I bring to Aging But Dangerous: embracing life in all its messiness, and proving that age only sharpens our strength and enriches our wisdom.
Sharing this story on stage, I encourage others to reflect on their own “two bullets,” the moments they’ve felt defeated or unsure. Together, we learn that within us is an incredible ability to stand tall, laugh loud, and, most importantly, move forward with courage.
Jean Ketcham’s journey to founding Aging But Dangerous was not sparked by a single moment but was instead a realization that grew over time. Throughout her life, Jean looked around and saw countless women, particularly those over 50, slowly retreating from the passions, adventures, and bold choices that once defined them. Society seemed to be telling these women to fade quietly into the background, to let go of their youthful zest. This slow revelation built within Jean a conviction: something had to be done. Aging didn’t mean shrinking away; it meant stepping forward with humor, courage, and an unapologetic love for life. That’s when Jean knew Aging But Dangerous had to be created.
With years of experience as a business owner, mother, and cancer survivor, Jean knew about resilience and the power of choice. In 2008, together with her friend C. Suzanne Bates, Jean co-founded Aging But Dangerous to empower women over 50 to break free from societal stereotypes and live boldly, with fun, style, and spirit.
What started as a small idea quickly grew into a celebrated movement. Through exhilarating skydiving events, vibrant fashion shows, and honest discussions on everything from health to sexuality, Jean has inspired thousands of women to redefine aging as a time for adventure, freedom, and courage. Her story, captured in her book Aging But Dangerous, reaches women worldwide with a simple yet powerful message: aging is not a retreat, but a daring leap forward. Today, Jean continues to share this journey through her speaking engagements, proving that life’s later chapters can be the most thrilling ones yet.
