And most importantly, my loving parents and my loving husband (who I nicknamed "boy sweetness")
I overcame a traumatic health issue where half of my face was paralyzed for several months and I also needed to re-learn how to walk. so I turned lemon into lemonades by making my walker (or rollator) into a light-up glitter bomb and made videos of my recovery to inspire my friends, family, and clients to be authentic and share their triumphs and vulnerabilities out loud with the world.
I was inspired by two main life events!
The first, a childhood friend and her family from China. As the first American friend to the Yung family, I saw first-hand how arduously Ada’s parents worked to communicate in English. I loved helping them (from my 6-year-old perspective) to pronounce English—and as a reward—I’d receive post-its with Cantonese phrases. A prize which I’ve cherished for years!
The second–my study abroad to Salamanca, Spain. I lived, studied, and tutored (through “intercambios”) while living in Spain and I developed a deep empathy for language learners. I also immersed myself in Spanish language and the study of its phonetics and phonology. While I was there, I tutored a college student who failed at six consecutive attempts to pass her senior exit exams. After just a few sessions of working on her pronunciation phonemic awareness, and taking dictation, she passed–and I was hooked on helping. I even became a fluent Spanish-speaker in the process!
