I generally get paid for speaking but make exceptions
My supervisor sat me down to talk to me one-on-one, and said,
"Daphne, when you’re interacting with our clients, you’re engaging, you’re excited, and you own the room. But in front of our site contact and other authority figures in your project manager role, your shoulders slump down, your head goes down, and you have little to say." He waited for me to answer.
At 23 years old, as someone who tried to be excellent at everything, I realized in that moment that I had a confidence issue that absolutely needed to be addressed.
Many of us have experiences that tell us to stay in our place or be seen and not heard. But what would happen if we all showed up as our best professional selves at work in every work situation? The impact could be priceless.
My inability to work at my full potential with my superiors, even appearing unengaged due to my lack of confidence, could impact my career.
Around a year later, I earned a Director role within that organization, interfacing with different regional leaders and also communicating to community, government, and foundation leaders.
I went about working intensely on how I showed up and went from a 23-year-old physically hiding myself in meetings to someone who was promoted as a result of my efforts to exude the best version of myself.
I realized that striving to work in my full potential in my role, had me experience more passion, purpose, and impact within that role!
I am a first-generation American, born to two Haitian immigrants in a Miami neighborhood that was experiencing an increase in drugs and violence during my upbringing. However, using some of the same strategies I use with clients, I have committed my life to overcoming obstacles and embracing opportunity and success, speaking at my undergraduate graduation, making my way to an Ivy League University for my Master’s Degree, and causing massive business growth in the business ventures I have been a part of. As a result of my community work, I was a two-time finalist for the Washington, D.C. Capital Cause Changemaker of the Year award.
