A career as a senior level Human Resource leader with P&L, sales, and customer service in her DNA - and - as a first generation woman of color, Mylene brings a unique perspective to the stage. Stories and experiences from the start of her career at Enterprise Holdings (Enterprise Rent-A-Car), the leadership skills developed on her way to executive roles, and applying her brand of leadership in the engineering and technology world of the Boeing Co., all come together to shape the methods and systems she brings to partners and clients today. From individual executive/strategic coaching, to building human capital strategies, to executing enterprise-wide transformations, Mylene uses practical approaches to build systems that execute on business deliverables while also elevating and sustaining women and BIPOC talent. In her post-corporate/Career 3.0 life, she continues to explore, learn, and grow as projects and engagements come to her Leadership Ladder consulting practice.
When she isn’t building partnerships or championing diversity initiatives, Mylene is an aunt to a niece and nephew in Seattle / she is traveling to enjoy in the many cultures and beautiful places on this planet / and she is savoring delicious meals with friends and loved ones.
I love providing a new perspective, sparking an idea, and igniting people to leverage their strengths. When I see that twinkle of creativity or motivation in their eyes, my energy levels get a boost. Add a diversity component — how can we better support women in the workplace, what can we do to improve the elevation of BIPOC talent to management and leadership roles, what public/private/non-profit partnership can we create to meet shared goals — and now I’m super-charged! I didn’t have many women (never mind a Filipino-American one) to look up to as I started my corporate career. I want to inspire first-generation, women, and BIPOC talent to reach and experience “success” — whatever that may mean to them. I want to be surrounded by smart, fun, collaborative people who will teach and partner with me to build stronger teams and positive business cultures. I want to teach people to identify their strengths, leverage them, and effectively find those with complementary talents and skills so they can collectively achieve. These are the components of my former HR corporate life that I focus on within Leadership Ladder today and that feed my soul.
In my early adulthood I lived between two worlds. With my family, I was the dutiful Filipino daughter adhering to customs, sensitive to cultural cues, and part of the family hierarchy. Outside of my family, I was the young American professional who would out-work anyone and compete for the promotion that would provide everything that comes with the American dream: money in the bank, a nice home, nice things, and the luxury of traveling. The worlds didn’t always align. In fact, many times they clashed. And this is the story of one such clash. The clash that resulted in my grandfather not speaking to me for two years.
This experience put my two worlds in stark relief. It taught lessons in communication across my worlds. It opened my eyes to other situations, spaces, and ways code-switching happens in my environment and what a helpful skill code-switching is. It pushed me to shape the identity of me — what are my values, what do I want to accomplish, how do I become comfortable in my own skin and own who I am — so I could live and work authentically. Join me in this conversation to share the tips I developed from what I learned and so I can learn from you!
I am a first-generation Filipina who is the first-of-firsts — my mother is the first of 10 siblings and I am the first of over 30 grandchildren on that side of my family. I am also the first to leap into a career in corporate America, grow through roles in retail sales, customer service, operations, business development ,and ultimately land in the function of Human Resources. Without people, there is no “business”. I love driving the growth, sustainability, and excellence of an organization through maximizing its human capital — with an intentional eye on elevating women and BIPOC talent.
After over 20 years with Enterprise Holdings (Enterprise Rent-A-Car) and five additional years as the HR business partner to the CIO at the Boeing Co., I now have the pleasure and privilege of sharing my knowledge with others. Leadership Ladder LLC allows me to share the stories, the lessons, and the effective systems I built to positively impact business deliverables and culture. Through executive/strategic coaching, consulting engagements, and board leadership I bring my HR expertise — with a DNA of sales/P&L/customer service and a lens on diversity — to individuals and organizations who share my values and are driven to elevate who they are, what they do, how they do it as they bring products and services to market.
