International Travel never disappoints!
Traveling from Tokyo, where I was living and working as an expat I often commuted to NYC for meetings. One trip I boarded the airplane, only to sit on the tarmac for an extended period of time with no communication from the cockpit. When we all started to get a little antsy, I noticed that 8 very well dressed and very handsome and commanding men boarded the plane in dark suits. We were in business class and it was surprisingly empty for an international flight. They proceeded to each take a row and sit down. I chatted in my elementary Japanese with the businessman next to me, as we inquired back and forth with one another, what was going on. Moments later, the curtain to the business class section opened and on stepped the Dalai Lama himself. He was ushered onto the plane, followed by an handful of monks behind him. He took a seat in between two of the well dressed men and settled in. I have traveled a million times and it usually takes me some time to lessen my anxiety and get comfortable. But when the Dalai Lama walked on board it was like the energy field of the entire plane completely shifted and a calmness over took everything around him. Needless to say it was the most comfortable flight of my life, not because the snacks were fresh or the cocktails full, but because his sense of peace reverberated around him. I think of his entrance every time I lead others, facilitate a workshop or give a talk. How you show up and set the tone matters. Your energy is everything. Never underestimate the impact of that.
