What Baby?

Ask any accountant, and they will tell you that January 1st through April 15th are the most stressful in their lives. We are trying to add value without putting our clients at jeopardy with the Big Bad Three (you know - the I, the R, and the S!). It's long nights, bad food, and short tempers for 3.5 months...

But one thing I always did was let my family know I loved them every day before I left for work, during brief (and I do mean BRIEF breaks during the day, and in the wee hours of morning when I got home - because after midnight, it's technically morning). And I am clear that I was able to do so because I have an awesome support system of family and friends who do the same - it's reciprocal reaching out and checking in on one another. One of my colleagues wasn't as fortunate to have such a village, and one day it all came to a head - literally.

She forgot one of the heads in her family. She forgot her youngest child. I don't mean she forgot to pick up, drop off, pack a lunch bag... I mean, she forgot she had a baby!

We were deep into the preparation season, it was April, and we'd been at it all night. We all ran home, showered, redressed, and came back. My colleague was haggard... a reflection of how we all felt. The daycare called about an hour into our mass return and the secretary said, "Ma'am, the school is calling about your baby."

"What baby?" my colleague asked. Everyone froze in shock.

The secretary stammered in astonishment, "Your child... your child's school is calling!"

We all realized that our colleague was so worn down from our brutal schedule that she didn't know if "she was coming or going" as the old folks used to say.

But I knew - I knew I was going to stop this craziness before I went crazy. I put my foot down. No more all nighters, 80 weeks, dashing in and out of my house as if it was a drive through food place. I staked out a new routine, and learned that my colleagues were doing the same. We went to management and did not have to make any demands - our actions spoke for themselves.

And lo and behold - our work reflected the change in our priorities. Once we stopped making "face time" and "hours billed" the prime directive, and focused more on quality time with loved ones and doing the things we loved - the time we worked was more productive and we got things done quicker. We learned the secret to a truly successful life - one of peace, joy, and fulfillment.

Was it all roses - absolutely not! We still worked a lot, but the food improved because we prioritized ordering earlier in the day, and we each committed to self-care routines of yoga, meditation, prayer, and/or silence to help manage our stress.

I hate that this realization happened at the expense of my colleagues meltdown, but I am grateful that we all learned from it.

And what happened to my colleague who forgot about her child - she quit... and and started her own firm, now with locations in five states!

Origin Story

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams," is my favorite quote by former First Lady and UN Ambassador Eleanor Roosevelt... and I had to answer the question, "What happens when your dreams turn into nightmares - how do you come back from that?!"

I had achieved just about everything I ever wanted - I am an attorney, CPA, six-time #1 bestselling author, international speaker, award-winning media company founder and CEO, and non-profit women's empowerment leader; wife to a good man and mother to an amazing daughter; and I almost died before I realized that true success could only come from within.

My ah ha moment came when my daughter (who was six years old - only 6!) at the time found me passed out from exhaustion in the middle of the floor, and tucked me in with her Disney blanket and pillow. I did not have the strength to put my own child to bed. That's when I knew I had to redefine success, and unhook it from my self-worth and -esteem.

It took me two years, work with an awesome performance coach, and continuing counseling to finally create the blueprint for a successful life full of peace, joy, and fulfillment. Now, I delight in sharing the how to's of this journey with audiences across the country!
