What most people know about me is that I'm a wife of 19 years, mother of a teenager, Family Medicine physician, trauma-informed resilience coach and speaker who has helped many professional women achieve prosperity and peace without sacrificing their wellbeing. But my life wasn't always this way.
In the bustling world of healthcare, I found myself immersed in a toxic environment as a physician. The relentless demands and emotional toll began to weigh heavily on me, and I started resorting to unhealthy habits to cope with the stress and pain.
A single glass of wine before dinner sometimes became a half bottle for the evening as my escape, a temporary reprieve from the chaos around me. I drowned my emotions in its numbing effects, hoping it would dull the agony within. But as the days turned into months, I realized that I was only further damaging my mind, body, and spirit.
One day, as I gazed at my exhausted reflection in the mirror, a shell of a woman, as I am reminded everytime I look at the photo, I had a choice to make—an unwavering commitment to rise above the darkness and harness the power of P.R.A.I.S.E to overcome these obstacles and reclaim my life. It wasn't easy. It wasn't sexy. But it was necessary for me to get back to ME and now be able to share that transformation with others.
I faced many obstacles including a toxic work environment in corporate medicine. But my biggest obstacle was myself - self-doubt, not feeling like I was good enough, fear of failing. I was so afraid of failing that I failed to live.
There was a time I recall taking a picture sitting on the stairs with my son, who was 5 or 6 at the time. When I look at that picture I see a physical body but it was just a shell of a person. I was emotionally numb and empty.
And to cope with that emptiness I self-medicated with an evening glass or two of alcohol to decompress and numb the pain.
In November of 2017, I was looking for some place, any place to get away from my problems and take my cape off when I stumbled upon the Art of Living Retreat Center. I signed up for The Happiness Program because I was so desperate to feel happy again. At that point, I had no gauge for what to expect.
Through this program, I learned to breathe again. I learned to live again. I had a new way of coping with life's challenges and finding more joy and peace in life. I like to tell people that this program is not therapy, but it's definitely therapeutic!
What I realized after taking the course was that I could not solve an internal problem with external solutions. "The enemy was the INNER ME". It then became my passion to help others, particularly those healthcare professionals who were experiencing similar feelings because I knew I wasn't alone. Many of the professionals I supervised were feeling this way and I knew I had to do something.
It led me to become a certified coach and create Optimal Vitality MD, llc. where I can now serve others from my overflow. I am just a doc with a passion to help repair a broken healthcare system by facilitating the healing of broken, burned out, and overwhelmed healthcare professionals.
