Biography

IMMAD is a company that specializes in services, education and technology for the responsible use of marijuana. The primary product is technology to determine functional impairment with the use of marijuana. It is NOT a biologic such as blood, saliva, breath or urine. It is NOT a test of eye movement. IMMAD capitalizes on the eye's retinal ganglion cell dysfunction that is caused by the use of marijuana. IMMAD measures peripheral vision. IMMAD uses dynamic targets of low spatial frequency to measure the dead spots in peripheral vision. IMMAD measures the "tunneling" of vision often reported by marijuana users. IMMAD as a company also provides educational content on cannabinoids, cannabis and marijuana. Topics include teen brain impact, Alzheimer's disease, older adult general, driving targeting teens or adults, first responder safety, glaucoma (not a good use of cannabis), the Americans With Disabilities Act and the visual system in general.

Passion

My passion is safe driving. Sadly, it does not put a smile on my face. My early exposures to the many families who lost a family member to a drunk or drugged driver were through organ donor related activities. I lost our oldest child when he was age fifteen. He had significant heart disease and did not live long enough to receive a life saving heart donation. Many of these heart donors died needlessly in car crashes where a driver was drunk or high. Loosing a child is a pain no family should ever have to bear. It is doubly painful if the death was preventable. Our product has application in manufacturing, aviation, maritime, railway, public transit and surface shipping. But I am committed to producing a tool for law enforcement use. It is critical to remove dangerous drivers from the road. Currently there is no test of function for marijuana that parallels the Standard Field Sobriety Test for alcohol. IMMAD is tool that will enable law enforcement to help safe lives. And the lives of children are at great risk with the use of marijuana. The state of Washington is finding that a driver involved in a fatal crash testing positive for only the positive active marijuana/THC (demonstrating use within three hours or so) are five times more likely to have killed someone other than themselves; an innocent pedestrian, bicyclist, passenger or other driver, compared to a driver using alcohol. Marijuana impaired drivers often survive the crash, but have killed someone else.

Best Story

My brain exploded....I was looking closely at how to test those with Alzheimer's disease for safest and most efficacious dosing when I realized that a simple four minute test that I had been researching as a viable early diagnostic tool for Alzheimer's disease (OK did not work that well) would be extremely sensitive to marijuana related retinal impairment. WORST NEWS We were told by our state that we are a marijuana business and thus not eligible for the traditional business financing that would have enabled us to do legal proof of concept. We were able to do the proof legally in December of 2016. The scary thing, IMMAD shows worse dysfunction than expected. IMMAD is more effective in demonstrating retinal impairment that impacts safe driving than we had expected. My business is woman owned AND one of diversity, it is considered a disadvantaged business as I have an acknowledged disability. I have the same congenital cardiac disease that took the life of our child.

Origin Story

I am an optometrist and neuroscientist. My training was in vision rehabilitation and I provided clinical services with the emphasis on adaptive driving. I also had a house call practice for older adults. For the past fifteen years I have been researching cognition, Alzheimer's disease and the visual system. Some of my funded research including drug efficacy studies. I am interested in the treatment potential of cannabinoids/marijuana for Alzheimer's disease. This interest led us to appreciate how effective the retina can be in demonstrating functional impairment with the use of cannabinoids/marijuana. IMMAD technology is truly innovative and now patent pending. IMMAD as a company also provides education. We have programs regarding safety of marijuana exposure (toxic molds and fire hazards) for first responders, driving education for teens and senior adults, Alzheimer's disease and cannabis research and general lectures for the older adult about medicinal and recreational cannabis.

Example Talks

Cannabis: The Transportation Industry Impact Impairment

This lecture is specific to any professional within the transportation industry. I review the current status of research related to the impact of marijuana impaired drivers on the road. This includes recent research demonstrating significant increases in pedestrians deaths in those states with legal adult use of marijuana. I review the neurologic processes in sensory systems that contribute to the marijuana impairment that leads to greater fatal injury to pedestrians. I discuss how our solution, the IMMAD test for law enforcement can help with the detection of impaired driving and facilitate the court room evidence that is needed to remove such drivers from the road.

Cannabinoids, Cannabis and Marijuana: Glaucoma

This talk reviews the visual system with the emphasis on the anterior segment. The majority of those states allowing for marijuana to treat disease, allow for its use for glaucoma. There are currently better means to control glaucoma. Further there never has been a quality study looking at long term treatment efficacy with cannabis. This talk reviews the limited research and discusses the implications of treatment using cannabis.

Driving and Marijuana: Deadly

This talk is specific to driving, cognition, vision and marijuana. The target audience is law enforcement, manufacturing and all of the transportation industry.

Americans With Disabilities Act and Marijuana

The field of marijuana and the legal issues are complex. The impact on workplaces is becoming evident. The disability issues related to the evolving industry and compliance with ADA are poorly understood. The issues of an employee requiring medicinal marijuana and legal concerns are ever evolving. This lecture reviews relevant examples.

Teen Brains, Driving and Marijuana

While in refute by some groups, the use of marijuana by teens is on the increase in those states with recreational marijuana. Many states allow for recreational use, but only for responsible adults over the age of 21. There are serious health issues that impact the developing brain. There are serious consequences when driving with marijuana or being a passenger in car with a driver having used marijuana. This lecture is targeting the younger audience.

Older Adults and Marijuana

Those over the age of 65 are among the fastest growing groups of new (or return to use...) marijuana users. This population face unique risks with the use of products that they are not familiar with. This lecture reviews the science of cannabis, the evolving product market and the use of marijuana with the older adult in mind.

FIrst Responders and Marijuana

FIrst responders; fire, police and medical, face unique risks related to marijuana grown in private residences. This lecture reviews topics that these professionals need to know to remain safe and healthy.

Alzheimer's Disease, Visual System, Cannabis

This talk reviews the visual system and research related to the use of cannabis as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease.
