I'm a TEDx speaker, a Moth storyteller and instructor, story consultant, and the host of an award-winning podcast, No Time to be Timid. For nearly 15 years, I developed communications and training programs for leading business institutions, including Harvard Business School and Fidelity Investments. I then decided to redirect my creative energies from business to the arts. I now speak and consult across the United States, helping people unlock their creative energy using the No Time to be Timid Manifesto as a framework while blending my in-depth artistic experience and extensive business career.
Anything that involves courage and stepping out of your comfort zone. My personal motto is "The riskiest thing you can do is play it safe."
It was December 2010. I'd been performing my one-woman show "How to Draw a Nekkid Man" for several years, and wanted to expand the show's audience. I was told I should tell a story on The Moth stage, an organization I hadn't heard of and even though I was scared, I was committed to do what was best for the show. I drove to New York, put my name in a hat at the Bitter End at a Moth StorySlam, and when my name was selected, got on stage in front of 300 strangers and told my story. To date, it is one of the bravest things I have ever done, and kickstarted my career with The Moth and as a storyteller. It also paved the way for a longer version to be told on The Moth's MainStage, which was subsequently on their podcast and downloaded by a quarter million people. It showed me the power of taking thoughtful risks.
I was a facilitator for a marketing company for more than 4 years -- the work complemented my creative practice. In February 2020, I was sitting on a bed in a roadside motel with a scary disinfectant smell in Algoma, Wisconsin about to teach precision machinists how to use story in their marketing. I felt dead inside and I thought, I have got to make a change. For years, I'd been wanting to start a movement elevating creativity and the arts. So I wrote the No Time to be Timid Manifesto, started a podcast, and now offer retreats and workshops, helping people unlock their creativity and their story.
Many people yearn to be creative but follow a prescribed path out of habit or fear. The No Time to be Timid Manifesto is a framework to awaken creativity and boldness in both our personal and professional lives.
A wise person once said, “Everyone will tell you the cost of going, but no one will tell you the cost of staying.” As women in leadership positions or desiring to be, we must step off the expected path and into our most creative selves to discover the rich, full life that awaits.
The world is waking up to the power of story for communication, innovation, and connection, but few people know how to tell stories in a compelling and engaging way. Learn the art and craft of storytelling, so you can connect with audiences and affect the change you desire.
