I LOVE anything new: products, ideas, people, food, technology... Startups are going to change the world, and I love seeing the light bulbs go off when I advise them
How I made a feature documentary.
I was talking with a woman pilot I had interviewed for a client piece a few month prior & she said she was going off on an Air Race.
"What's that?" I asked.
And she proceeded to tell me about the Air Race Classic & the Powder Puff Derby, and women pilots and how this year, they were flying into Kitty Hawk for the 100th anniversary of flight!
I was fascinated & excited & said, " That's amazing! Has anyone ever done a documentary film about women pilots?"
"Not that I know of," she said
"Why is that?" I inquired
"I guess nobody cares." was the reply.
Well, the last time THAT phrase crossed my path, I ended up running for office & winning, so the gauntlet was down.
I asked if I could give her a camera to shoot in the cockpit & on her way, and I met her in Kitty Hawk in June 2003, did 64 interviews. Two weeks later we were in Huntsville at Space Camp for the 99's Convention & did another 67 interviews, and continued on to over 220 interviews with women pilots & premiered "Wings of Their Own" at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in NY on December 17, 2003, the 100th Anniversary of Flight. I inspired lots of women to take flying lessons & sold over 2500 DVDs & made a profit
I was sitting on the couch watching "Sesame Street" with kids, when my husband came home & said, "I love shooting, but I hate the company." He was a cameraman for a NYC TV station.
I said, "well, I can do that."
he said "Prove it."
So, a local band needed a music video. I wrote it, produced it, directed it. He shot it. We edited together & I made a lot of choices he did not agree with. And, it got on MTV.
So he said, "I guess you CAN do that."
That was the beginning of Make Believe TV
