Here are my passions in life:
- Debunk deficit thinking views of the Hispanic/Latino community that has kept them playing small when in reality they are the growing force of this country. Latinos represent 20% of the working force and by 2060, 1 out of every 3 women will be a Latina! We all need to pay attention to the Hispanic/Latino population - the future is indeed Latino!
- Work with organizations, teams, and leaders to create more inclusive work cultures - I LOVE helping leaders develop intercultural competency and emotional intelligence needed to lead the diverse and pluralistic work cultures that we have in our workplaces. It's an essential skill that all leaders need to develop.
- Develop my OWN cultural and Emotional Intelligence by traveling to different places and respectfully learn about other cultures - especially road trips! Having a car and drive everywhere in a foreign land gives me so much pleasure!
- Humans - I am a FIRM BELIEVER in the human mind potential and spirit... I am always amazed by human stories, human nature, human wonder!
When working on my dissertation, one of my advisors asked me to call her by her first name, Jo, instead of Dr. Worthy. I had known her for a about a year and she was one of the nicest human beings I have ever met. What do you think was my response? How long do you think it took me to actually do that? Guess?
Six months or more... And during that time when I couldn't call her "Jo", I didn't use her name and used only "you"... as in "Hi! How are you? What do you think?" There was no way on Earth I was going to call a senior professor by her first name. And while I knew other American and Anglo students were on a first name basis with their advisors, my culture of respect to your elders made this very difficult. And I have many similar examples...
One of my many cultural drivers or scripts was in play here - being respectful, being a nice, well-behaved girl with very good manners = "educada". Culture will always shape our actions, our decisions, our thoughts - it's essential to become aware of the role culture has on our lives and our decisions instead of blindly go around our worlds. Awareness is always the first step for growth, because once we know where our reactions are coming from, we will be able to channel them in ways that are productive and conducive to our goals.

Develop the Skills to Effectively Work Across Cultures
Have you ever been in situations that have left you puzzled and frustrated because you simply haven’t felt tuned in to teammates with a different background? Do you often tell yourself “I just don’t get it” when dealing with people from other countries, cultures, or ethnic groups? If so, you’re not alone; you are one of the many people attempting to operate in this multicultural world.
Cultural differences exist in every workplace. On the positive side, working with people from different backgrounds can broaden one’s perspective, foster creativity, and promote innovation. However, cultural differences can also bring misunderstandings, cultural tensions and communication barriers.
While these challenges clearly exist, navigating cultural differences should not necessarily be a consistently difficult experience. With the right mindset and approach to develop cultural competence, working along cultural differences can be an enriching and rewarding experience that promotes personal growth and inclusive workplaces.
In this keynote speech, you’ll learn more about how cultural differences impact the workplace and specific strategies to work across cultures as a way to thrive in today’s multicultural and diverse workplace.
Learning objectives
- Understand how diverse cultural perspectives can impact the workplace
- Explore the impact of cultural differences in our personal performance
- Learn how specific cultures - for example, Latino and USA - can clash in profound ways
- Discover how developing cultural competence requires attention to emotional intelligence and mindfulness.
- Take away cultural competence skills that can foster better personal interactions and productivity in the workplace.
Wonderful feedback received:
- "Good mix of the theoretical and applied given the time constraint."
- "She spoke in a direct and relatable way with good examples."
- "One of the best trainings on cultural competence that I have attended."
• Are your cultural scripts getting in the way of your goals?
• Who is the Boss, you or your cultural scripts?
• Is your culture holding you back?
• How can you break free from the things that hold you back?
Latino representation in leadership positions doesn’t reflect Latino demographic gains numbers and potential. Culturally-relevant specialized leadership development and education that takes into consideration our specific cultural history benefits Latino leaders . And a first step in this process is a clear understanding of how our cultural scripts impact our actions.
Latinos share deeply-ingrained cultural assumptions and beliefs - or cultural drivers- that affect our behaviors, actions, and decision-making. Have you wondered why you make certain decisions and then wish to go back and change them? Or do you wonder why certain family beliefs still take precedence over others? Have you ever said to yourself, “Why didn’t I speak up?” or “Why didn’t I say ‘No’ and put myself first?” or “Why can’t I be a better planner of my future?” You are not alone.
In this session, Dr. Alejandra Mielke will introduce the concept of cultural drivers, will explain how they impact our performance, how they can clash with mainstream views of leadership, and discuss ways to learn how to use these cultural drivers as our superpowers.
You will learn how these Latino cultural scripts show up in your personal life and gain evidence-based strategies to break free and rise above to create your own powerful scripts.
COMFORT and GROWTH are NOT friends. Yes, growing is generally quite an uncomfortable process. And stepping out of our comfort zones can be paralyzing.
Research has found that our comfort zone can act as a performance improvement barrier that traps us by fear, impostor syndrome, and self-doubt. Trying to avoid all these negative feelings will keep you in that comfort zone. But learning how to break this barrier, learning how to take risks, learning how to go to the other side of this comfort zone will allow you to leverage all your leadership potential.
In this session, Dr. Mielke will discuss how we experience this process of stepping out of our comfort zones: What makes this process more complicated? What does it really mean for us to "leave our comfort zones"? What is in play? How have we experienced this discomfort for growth? And also ways to support this process and make it easier.
Latinas are and will continue to be a determinant force in this country. Think about these facts: Latinas make up nearly 25% of the female population in the USA. By 2060, 1 out of 3 women will be Latina. 16.4% of bachelor’s degrees and 12.3% of Masters degrees belong to Latinas. There is no argument: Latinas are resilient, educated, tenacious and inclusive.
And in a world where Generation Zs are and will continue to push for new ways of leadership that reflect the diversity of our societies, Latinas have what it takes to advance a human-centric leadership that is authentic, empathetic, and adaptive.
During this session, Dr. Mielke will present ways by which Latinas can understand their power as leaders and ways by which organizations can support Latina leadership.
This is an exceptional talk to celebrate International Women's Day on March 8, 2023 and during the whole month of March.
International Women's Day 2023 will be celebrated on March 8. And as such we need to celebrate and support Latinas in the workplace by guiding to recognize and leverage their super powers.
Powerful Latina leaders understand how their strengths, gifts, qualities, and values as members of the Latinx community meld together to form who they are and how they show up in the world. However, we seldom take the time to reflect on these qualities and see how our actions align with who we truly are and what we truly value. Developing awareness of your superpowers and cultural strengths are powerful first steps to developing and harnessing your brand as a way to stand out from the competition and help you control the narrative about yourself and your work.
During this workshop/talk, Dr. Mielke will discuss how your brand should be created around your superpowers, and present and discuss a 6-step process to recognize, fall in love, and leverage your superpowers!
In 2020, Latinas made up nearly 25% of the female population in the USA. By 2060, 1 out of 3 women will be Latina. However, Latinas make .55 cents for every dollar a White, Non-Hispanic man makes. Companies' leaders can't ignore this demographic group's distressing professional and financial outcomes, as they will inevitably affect the whole - both at the societal and organizational levels. Understanding how Latina Pay Inequity can affect us in many ways is an essential future-forward leadership trait companies need to engage in.
In this presentation, Dr. Mielke will share:
- The real numbers behind Latina Pay Inequity
- How companies that don't prioritize fair pay for women, Latinas included, will end up with gaps in other areas, such as:
Leadership - Employees demand a human-centric leadership
Performance - Businesses with women in top management positions are more profitable
Retention - Fair pay will help you avoid wasting money on unnecessary turnover
Branding - Efforts toward fair pay can uplevel your branding as a recruiting tool.
- How to start thinking about efforts to narrow the pay gap in your organization
