Career & Life Coach, Author, Women's Health Expert
My WHY is that we must all empower & lift each other up. My big idea is that women in faculty positions are successful by virtue of securing those positions not just successful when they achieve tenure or get promoted. Empowering faculty women to navigate career transitions without sacrificing their values, passions, and goals . I also assert that pay equity for women must be established in academe.
Today, I am so thankful to have the opportunity to help other women to thrive, achieve life-work wellness, and to create the life they want.
There was a time when I was very overwhelmed by my work commitments not just related to time but also what was being asked of me. In 201,4 I was at a crossroads in my work life wondering if I should find something else to do.
I was a new assistant dean and given the charge of developing and implementing a college-wide vision for interprofessional education (IPE). This vision was not supported by many of my colleagues within the five schools of the College. People including some of my closest friends and colleagues would ask me why I was doing this and say things like “We’re doing fine.” “We don’t need this.” “I like you but I don’t like this and I’m not doing it”.
Many days I felt alone, alienated, anxious and at times overwhelmed by this overarching charge. I had also been told by several colleagues and admired mentors that it was unlikely that I would get promoted to a full professor due to the overarching responsibilities that my position required. Someone said to me, “…come talk to me you got the wrong message”.
My Dean, who was quite insightful and supportive, gave me a coach, which resulted in a life-changing experience. Initially, I didn’t think the coaching process would be helpful to me and saw the coach’s assignments as adding to my already heavy workload. However, over the course of 3 months, the coach guided me through an eye-opening process that changed my perspective on work-life integration.
Because of what I learned and the strategic changes I made during that time, I had renewed energy, a solid passion for accomplishing my big assignment, and the motivation to advance my own vision for my scholarship:
• I successfully implemented the change in the College with many faculty and students supporting me.
• I was able to greatly enhance and maintain a consistent level of scholarship and got promoted to full professor.
• I shared what I learned with colleagues. Who then successfully implemented these practices, resulting in their own increased productivity and scholarship, and with several getting promotion and/or tenure themselves.
What I now know to be true because of coaching:
• Mindset informs perspective.
• Self-care is paramount to optimal productivity.
• Self-reinvention is energizing and fulfilling at any age.
After my own transformation, I wanted to help others the way I had been helped. So, I went through a rigorous process to get my coaching certification.
Every client I have ever worked with has had their own series of breakthroughs like the ones that I shared.
That’s why I am so committed to helping other women determine what they really want, to be productive not busy, and to give priority to the healing benefits of self-care.
I realized that despite loving the life & career of an academic. I was most energized when I was actively engaged in coaching & mentoring others to grow professionally, personally, & realize their dreams, goals, & desires. Hence, I decided to give full attention to my passions. I sought education & certification in health & life coaching because one can't have a truly fulfilling career without giving attention to self-care & personal wellness.
