My husband's infidelity saved our marriage. That's right. As a high-achiever, I was working myself to death trying to have it all for my family and myself and I nearly lost it all. The stress, overwhelm and burnout affected my health, my mood, and my relationship with my husband. When I discovered my husband's infidelity, I know I shared the responsibility for the breakdown in our marriage. Becoming a high-performer allowed me reverse the burnout that was damaging my success.
I decided to become an entrepreneur after working as a dental hygienist for over 30 years, when I was suddenly downsized and panicked. The humiliation of going on interviews at the age of 50 coupled with the thought of being an employee for another 20 years, scared me into investing in myself to start my own business and become financially free. I was able to create a new life for myself and my family after the age of 50.
In every high-stakes conversation, the difference between collaboration, resolution and escalation comes down to one skill set: listening. Yet most leaders default to defending, persuading, or fixing, and most leadership training treats listening as a soft skill rather than a deployable methodology for building the safe, collaborative environments where people fell safe to contribute.
This presentation changes that.
In this session, you will learn to apply the LAPI Listening Framework, a four-step model that gives leaders a structured way to interrupt assumptions, defuse defensiveness, and create inclusive spaces where differing perspectives are heard and trust is built across difference.
Using the Ladder of Inference and employing the art of powerful open-ended questions, you will practice the framework in real workplace scenarios through role play and live demonstration.
Participants will leave with the ability to recognize where assumptions form and escalate conflict, formulate the questions that move stuck conversations forward, and apply LAPI in their own high-stakes moments and the leadership programs you design or facilitate to build safer, more inclusive, more collaborative teams.
Every participant receives the LAPI Quick Reference Card and access to the Powerful Questions Guide, both built to make the methodology immediately usable upon leaving the session.
After completing this session, you will be able to:
· Apply the four steps of the LAPI Listening Framework (Listen, Acknowledge, Paraphrase, Inquire) in high-stakes leadership conversations to reduce defensiveness and build trust across difference.
· Use the Ladder of Inference to recognize the specific moments where your own assumptions form, escalate, and drive premature conclusions.
· Formulate powerful open-ended questions and apply the listening behaviors that create safe, inclusive environments where differing perspectives surface and every team member contributes fully to decisions.
· Stop the three most common response habits (defending, persuading, fixing) that shut down dialogue, reinforce exclusion, and erode psychological safety.
This presentation is designed for busy professionals and entrepreneurs who are tired of sacrificing their health, well-being, and relationships to climb the ladder of success. Participants will learn implementable habits and practical strategies designed to boost clarity, improve focus and productivity, and generate the energy needed to live their best lives now.
