I became an AI Ethicist by saying "yes" to an invitation at Google in NYC. I had absolutely no tech background... but found myself seated at a table with some of the world's top technology leaders. I asked what they did...then I asked a bunch of questions and suddenly was asked if I would join a working group with the largest professional engineering organization in the world. The group was setting the recommended standards for the design of AI related to human well-being. I am a contributing author to those standards and now am a Co-Chair of their AI Ethics Education committee as well as Chair of other committees with the organization. As a result, this year I was invited to speak at Stanford and will be speaking in January in Davos at the the World Economic Forum.
I got to where I am by being curious, being creative, and always asking questions. I get bored easily and have always looked to learn something new. Because of that, have worked in more than a dozen professions, diving in head first...learning whatever I needed to become skilled as a practitioner.
What does it take to motivate people to take action for climate repair? Identifying the universal underlying causes and barriers is the first step. Building a tangible foundation for engagement and transformation are the next.

Achieving a sustainable, net-zero-emissions future will require the acceleration of technology development and deployment. Measurable and meaningful ESG (environmental, social, and governance) metrics, together with other private and public-sector initiatives and policies, will help advance technology for sustainability.
Hosted by IEEE in partnership with the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, this explored regulatory, policy, and financial frameworks critical to advancing technology which prioritizes people, planet, and purpose-driven progress. Keynotes and panels were followed by workshop writing sessions, led by the Planet Positive 2030 Community.
