One of the most memorable clients I've ever worked with wasn't looking for a new career. She was looking for herself.
When we first met over Zoom, she was a highly successful executive leading large teams and earning a significant income. By almost every external measure, she had "made it." She was the person every young woman in her firm wanted as a mentor.
Within the first few minutes of our conversation, she looked at me and quietly said,
"I hate my job, and I'm leaving."
I smiled and asked, "Congratulations! Are you retiring?"
She immediately shook her head.
"I don't like that word."
That response fascinated me.
Most people spend decades dreaming about retirement. She had spent decades building a successful career, yet the thought of walking away filled her with anxiety instead of freedom.
As we continued working together, it became clear why.
She knew how to lead organizations.
She knew how to solve complex problems.
She knew how to inspire teams.
She knew how to exceed expectations.
What she didn't know anymore was who she was outside of her title.
One day she paused in the middle of a coaching session and said something I'll never forget:
"I don't think I know who I am."
That's one of the bravest things anyone can admit.
Many high achievers become so successful at playing their professional roles that, over time, those roles become their identity. We stop asking, "What do I want?" and start asking, "What am I supposed to do next?"
Over the next few months, our work wasn't about helping her escape work. It was about helping her reconnect with herself.
One Saturday afternoon my phone rang.
She was almost shouting with excitement.
"I've figured it out!" she said. "I need to love myself more."
That realization changed everything.
She decided to get certified as a fitness instructor, became more involved with causes she deeply cared about, strengthened her boundaries, and found the courage to make decisions that reflected who she was becoming instead of who she thought she was supposed to be.
Perhaps the biggest surprise?
She didn't retire after all.
Instead, she accepted a position with an organization whose mission genuinely inspired her. She still leads. She still contributes. She still makes a difference.
The difference is that today she brings her whole self to work instead of leaving herself behind every morning.
That experience reinforced something I believe deeply:
Self-awareness isn't a luxury or a "soft skill." It's the foundation of authentic leadership.
When people know who they are beyond their job title, they make better decisions, build healthier relationships, lead with greater courage, and create stronger organizations.
That's why I speak about self-awareness, self-leadership, and sustainable joy.
Because when people become more whole, everyone benefits: the individual, the team, the organization, and the community they serve.
The best leaders don't lose their identity at work. They make their greatest contributions from the fullness of who they are: their wisdom, lived experiences, values, curiosity, passion, and humanity.
When people hear the name Mind-Blowing Happiness®, they often assume I've always been a happy person.
The truth is, I created this work because I wasn't.
I grew up in Brooklyn carrying far more anger, pain, and uncertainty than anyone around me knew. Like so many women, I learned to become high-achieving, capable, and independent. I built what looked like a successful career—earning my MBA, spending more than twenty years in corporate leadership with companies like Verizon, Merrill Lynch, and JPMorgan. I worked with successful executives, entrepreneurs, and affluent clients who had achieved everything they thought would make them happy.
But I kept noticing something.
Success wasn't protecting people from burnout.
Money wasn't creating peace.
Achievement wasn't healing fear, anger, or self-doubt.
And if I'm honest, it wasn't doing that for me either.
That realization sent me on a journey that completely changed my life.
Over the next decade, I immersed myself in Buddhist philosophy, mindfulness, yoga, meditation, coaching, emotional intelligence, and the science of human behavior. I became less interested in how people built successful careers and more interested in how they built meaningful lives.
What I discovered surprised me.
Happiness isn't something we chase.
It's something that naturally emerges when we heal, become authentic, develop emotional mastery, and align our lives with our values.
That insight became the foundation of my Mind-Blowing Happiness® Framework.
Today, I help women leaders develop the inner skills that aren't typically taught in business school—self-awareness, emotional intelligence, resilience, courageous communication, and compassionate leadership—because I've seen firsthand that these qualities transform not only careers but entire organizations.
I've written four books, including 12 Steps to Mind-Blowing Happiness and The Anger Myth, but my greatest hope isn't that people remember my books.
It's that they remember how they felt after hearing me speak.
More courageous.
More authentic.
More compassionate.
More confident.
Because I believe the strongest leaders aren't the ones who never struggle.
They're the ones who have done the inner work—and create workplaces where other people can thrive because of it.
