Monica Smith works at the intersection of global leadership, culture, and performance. As a keynote speaker, moderator, and workshop leader, she helps organizations navigate the real dynamics of working across borders—turning cultural complexity into a powerful advantage for collaboration, innovation, and results.
If there is one word that defines my work, it is collaboration.
My career has been devoted to helping teams move from individual talent to shared momentum—creating environments where people align around purpose, contribute their strengths fully, and succeed together.
Working across cultures adds both complexity and opportunity to that process. The path to connection may require more intention, but the results are often far more powerful. Every engagement reinforces what I find endlessly fascinating about leadership: when people feel understood, respected, and connected to a shared purpose, their capacity to contribute expands dramatically.
Many of my best stories come from my years living and working internationally—particularly my three years in India and my work with teams in China, Europe etc and across global technology and business environments.
Those experiences were rich with moments of kindness and confusion, care and chaos. Cultural differences have a way of adding a little spice to collaboration. Sometimes that spice creates misunderstandings. More often, it creates the opportunity for insight, connection, and a deeper appreciation of how people think and work.
In my talks, I often share stories from those experiences—because they remind us that cross-cultural collaboration is rarely perfect, but it is almost always rewarding. when we approach cultural differences with curiosity and a willingness to learn, what first appears complicated often becomes the source of the most meaningful collaboration. And if we can keep our sense of humor along the way, we usually learn even more.
After more than 30 years in leadership roles within financial services—20 of those focused on globalization—I had the opportunity to lead high-stakes enterprise initiatives, build global operating models, and manage complex international teams.
But over time, something became clear.
While the projects were important, the work that energized me most was mentoring leaders, helping teams succeed together, and watching individuals gain the confidence to navigate global collaboration with greater skill and optimism.
I realized that my greatest contribution was not launching another global initiative—it was helping people perform at their best within those initiatives.
That realization led me to found Tradewinds Career Consulting, where I now work with leaders and organizations to strengthen intercultural leadership and collaboration across global teams. It also inspired the creation of the Collaborative Culture Podcast, which I co-host with Dr. Kristine Gentry, where we explore practical ways leaders can build cultures that unlock engagement, productivity, and shared success.
The podcast reflects the kinds of conversations I bring to the stage—practical, thoughtful, and grounded in real leadership experience. My co-host Dr. Kristine Gentry and I discuss practical l discuss practical leadership strategies in collaboration
