Biography

Suzi Nance is a Change Strategist, Author, Certified Hypnotherapist, and Speaker who helps individuals and organizations close the gap between intention and action, creating meaningful and lasting change. Founder of the Newport Center for Hypnotherapy, Suzi works with hospitals, schools, corporations, and private clients nationwide on topics including stress management, behavior change, wellness, communication, mindset, and performance.
Although Suzi spent more than 35 years at the helm of her family’s Newport, Rhode Island real estate firm giving her a unique understanding of business, people, pressure, and human behavior, it wasn’t until a personal health crisis led her to discover her true passion and the work she was meant to do: helping people and organizations create meaningful, lasting change as a Hypnotherapist and Change Strategist.
Known for her blend of practical strategies, humor, insights into how the brain and subconscious patterns drive behavior, and deeply relatable storytelling, Suzi has presented workshops, retreats, certification training, and keynotes across the country. Her work has included wellness retreats for wounded veterans and caregivers, stress management programs for hospitals and schools, and professional training workshops.
Suzi is certified in Health & Wellness Nutrition Planning through Harvard Medical School and is a Certified Hypnotherapist and Hypnosis Trainer through the National Guild of Hypnotists. She is also the author of the bestselling book Break Free of Negative Beliefs and the Weight that Clings to Them.
Her personal journey of losing more than 100 pounds, rebuilding her health, and helping thousands of others create sustainable change continues to shape both her work and her message: real change becomes possible when we learn how to work with the mind, not against it.

Passion

Helping people and organizations finally close the gap between knowing what they want to do and actually doing it! I’m passionate about behavior change, stress management, communication, mindset, wellness, and helping people create lives and work environments that feel and are the way they truly want them to be.

Best Story

One of my favorite personal stories began with a few articles I wrote on peace and global citizenship. At the time, I was still running my family’s real estate company in Newport, Rhode Island, and I was honestly nervous to share them because they felt so different from the professional identity people knew me for. But when I finally decided to trust myself and put them out into the world, some extraordinary things happened.

What started as a quiet passion project unexpectedly led to being invited to Sundance Film Festival to speak on personal peace and global citizenship, where I found myself in conversations with filmmakers and public figures including Bono, Kevin Bacon, Liam Neeson, Chris Rock, and members of ZZ Top.

For me, it became a powerful reminder that when we stop trying to fit neatly into who we think we’re “supposed” to be and allow ourselves to follow what genuinely moves us, doors can open in ways we never could have planned.

Origin Story

As someone blessed with a very high energy level, my life in 2011 looked much like the years before it. I was running a busy real estate firm in Newport, Rhode Island, serving on local boards, deeply involved in my community and family, and my husband and I enjoyed a very active social life.
Then, almost overnight, everything changed.
Within a matter of months, I felt like my body had been hijacked. I was dealing with chronic pain, exhaustion, brain fog, and a steady stream of new and frightening symptoms, along with a growing sense that something was deeply wrong. What followed was an exhausting cycle of doctor appointments, neurologists, tests, medications, and endless theories, with very few answers and even less relief.
Decades earlier, I had been told I likely had an autoimmune issue and was advised to stay on anti-inflammatory medication indefinitely. Even then, that approach never fully made sense to me, so I began researching nutrition and natural anti-inflammatory approaches, discovering that things like ginger and turmeric significantly helped manage many of my symptoms.
After six frustrating months of specialists and no real improvement, I decided I needed to become far more proactive in finding answers for myself, just as I had years before.
At first, my focus was purely practical and physical. I immersed myself in research about nutrition, inflammation, supplements, and what foods supported healing. During that deep dive, I kept coming across articles about mind-body healing, stress, and hypnosis… subjects I mostly brushed aside at the time. As someone who was very practical and business-minded, I honestly wasn’t particularly open to any of it.
But as my health slowly began improving through major changes in how I ate and cared for myself, I became more curious. I started reading more about the connection between stress, the subconscious mind, and physical well-being. One topic in particular kept grabbing my attention: hypnosis.
That curiosity changed the direction of my life.
The more I read, the more fascinated I became. Then I experienced hypnosis for myself, and it worked. I began studying intensely, practicing on anyone willing to let me, and seeing remarkable changes not only in others, but in myself. I was feeling healthier, more energized, and more like myself again.
Eventually, I decided to become certified as a hypnotherapist, although I was initially hesitant to share it publicly. Newport is a fairly traditional, buttoned-up community, and I wasn’t quite sure how my real estate clients would react to hearing that the broker/owner of Capitol Realty was now also a hypnotherapist.
Shortly after becoming certified, I happened to run into a local reporter who had covered town council meetings during my time on the council. He asked what was new, and I nervously told him I had become a hypnotherapist. His response was immediate:
“You have to let me write an article. Businesswoman. Councilwoman. Hypnotherapist.”
With a deep breath and fingers crossed, I said yes.
That article became the beginning of a thriving private practice and a new career I never could have predicted.
What I thought would simply become another small personal passion project, like my coaching and speaking… began growing into a full-time career. I found myself traveling around the country speaking, running retreats, and working with individuals, hospitals, schools, corporations, and organizations, helping people better understand behavior change, stress, mindset, and the subconscious patterns that shape our lives.
My own journey of losing more than 100 pounds and rebuilding my health eventually led to national media attention, including being featured in First for Women magazine. Women from all over the country began reaching out wanting help, and because I wasn’t yet working virtually, that ultimately inspired me to write my bestselling book, Break Free of Negative Beliefs and the Weight that Clings to Them.
Over time, I found myself doing less and less real estate and more and more of the work that truly lit me up. Leaving real estate was not a small decision. Real estate in Newport had been financially rewarding, deeply woven into my identity, and filled with relationships I genuinely treasured. But I also knew I had found something incredibly powerful… work that genuinely helped people change their lives.
About twelve years after first becoming ill, I officially stepped away from real estate, transformed the office into a center focused on hypnotherapy, speaking, and writing, and fully stepped into what I knew I was meant to do: helping people and organizations make the changes they so deeply desire.
